HDS Community Service Program

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Hancock Day School has encouraged student involvement in serving the community since it was founded in 1953.  The Community Service Program at HDS was established to prepare our students for a lifetime of service to others.  All students, Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, participate in a grade-level service project each year, servicing various agencies in the Savannah community.  In addition, students participate in several school-wide projects.  We hope to provide them with the opportunity to experience firsthand the pleasure of helping others while developing their communication, leadership, and decision-making skills.

Middle School Students are expected to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service each school year on their own.  Service hours must be documented using this HDS Community Service Log and be submitted to the Middle School Office.  The Middle School Administrative Assistant will keep a record of a student’s total hours by logging them into FACTS.

Requirements include:

  • 10 hours must be performed per school year

  • Service must be completed at a non-profit organization

  • Students cannot get paid for their service time

  • Service must be completed outside normal school hours

  • Chores done at home or in the neighborhood may not be used to satisfy requirements

  • The work performed must benefit the community

The President's Volunteer Service Award

In the 8th grade, students who complete hours beyond the basic Hancock Day School requirement are recognized at the annual Middle School Honors Assembly.  Eligibility for an award is separated into three levels:

  • Bronze:  50 - 74 hours

  • Silver:  75 - 99 hours

  • Gold:  100 + hours
