WASHINGTON, D.C. PAPERWORK
As the Washington trip rapidly approaches, please make sure that you have completed the required paperwork and submitted it to the Middle School Office.  This paperwork includes your signed permission slip, electronic device policy, and medication form. Additional copies of these documents can be found here.  We are looking forward to a great trip!

8TH GRADE GRADUATION SLIDESHOW
The Hancock Day School 8th grade graduation will be on Thursday, May 23rd.  Per HDS tradition, we will have a slideshow presentation of our 8th grade students during reception.  Please submit FIVE pictures of your choice to Mrs. Mannarino (mmannarino@hancockdayschool.org) by Friday, March 8th.

SMOKING, VAPING AND JUULING - PARENT.edu - MARCH 27TH!!
In response to the growing concern about the emergence and prevalence of e-smoking, we will be offering two information sessions in March as part of our Parent.edu series. The presentations are being coordinated by our nurses in conjunction with the Georgia Healthy Family Alliance.  There will be a student assembly for grades 6-8 during the school day followed by a Parent.edu presentation for parents at 6:00. More information and parent permission slips for the assembly will follow in March.

CARPOOL REMINDER!
Do you want to avoid those long morning lines??  Arriving early will help. Students can be dropped of from 7:30 - 7:55 at Hancock Hall.  After that the Gold and Green zones open up for drop off. Please drop off your child in the morning by 8:10 to ensure that they are ready to start the day when the 8:15 bell rings.
Each middle school student is required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year.  Please remember to list hours worked on a daily basis, do not log total sum of hours worked over an extended period of time.  See below for a few upcoming service opportunities. The President's Volunteer Service Award  In the 8th grade, students who complete hours beyond the basic Hancock Day School requirement are recognized at the annual Middle School Honors Assembly. Eligibility for an award is separated in three levels:  Bronze: 50 - 74 hours, Silver: 75 - 99 hours, Gold: 100 + hours. To qualify for this award your hours are due to Mrs. Mannarino by April 1st so they may be submitted to the President for review.


The March of Dimes Shamrock Run benefits the mission of the March of Dimes to improve the health of babies.  Students can earn a community service hour for participating in the 5K or kids run event on the evening of Friday, March 8th.  Registration information can be found here.


The Old Savannah City Mission needs volunteers for various positions.  The mission provides food, shelter, and clothing to the homeless.  For more information, contact Connell Stiles at 912-232-1979 or stiles@oscm.org.


America’s Second Harvest needs volunteers to help prepare monthly bags of food for senior citizens in our community.  Volunteers should arrive by 7:45 and must wear closed-toe shoes. Contact Bryce Seuntjens at bryce@helpendhunger.org for more information.

Algebra 1 - Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Algebra, we will wrap up Chapter 7 by solving special types of linear systems and linear systems of inequalities. On Wednesday and Thursday we will review for the Chapter 7 test that will take place on Friday (3/8).


Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
Next week, we will continue Chapter 9 by exploring how to find the surface area of prisms and cylinders (9.2), and pyramids and cones (9.3).  There will be a day of review on Thursday and a quiz covering 9.1-9.3 on Friday.


Geometry - Mr. Lanfear
Next week, we will continue Chapter 10 and circles by learning about inscribed angles (10.4), angle relationships within circles (10.5), and segment lengths in circles (10.6).


Physical Science - Ms. Hoffman
The 8th graders have learned a lot about the different types of waves (transverse and longitudinal) this week, including drawing them and labeling the parts, explaining the wave properties of frequency and speed, and understanding how they interact with other waves or objects.  They participated in a lab demonstrating and observing the wave interactions of reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference (constructive and destructive). (See photos below.) Our week culminated with a quiz over all this information. Next week we will focus on sound, including pitch, amplitude, sonic booms, resonance, the doppler effect, as well as learning about the human ear and how we hear. After the 8th grade DC trip and Spring Break, we will continue with sound, create a wave/ sound booklet, engage in a sound lab and have another quiz.







English Language Arts - Mrs. Boyer
Literature: Students will begin their Holocaust Unit by reading Night by Elie Wiesel.
ELA Unit Project: Students will be engaging in a four-six week project where they will be competing in the Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance) Writing and Art Contest which is sponsored by the Jewish Educational Alliance of Savannah. Rubrics and Due Dates will be handed out in the coming weeks.
Upcoming Units: Students will be engaging with the novel Night by Elie Wiesel from March 1st to May 1st. Students will engage in a learning segment regarding the history of the novel from March 4th-8th, in order to prepare them for entering the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC.


History & Gov’t II - Mrs. English
In an effort to support our students I have pushed back the map quiz over Africa to Monday, March 4th. We also will finish up our discussion of the Great Depression with readings and notes from Chapter 23.2 & 4. Our Great Depression test will be on Friday March 8th.


Spanish - Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish the 8th grade will continue to work with the grammar and vocabulary from Chapter 4B. Students will be writing  “Cuento de Hadas” while switching between the preterite and imperfect tense. The Chapter 4B test will be Thursday, March 7th.

History & Gov’t I - Mrs. English
This week students will continue to learn about the early American government. Students will see how the Founding Fathers debated issues of population, representation, and slavery. They also will look at the checks and balances of the current system used in the U.S. Readings and homework will come from Chapter 7.3. We will have a test over Chapter 7 and government on Friday, March 8th.


Spanish - Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish the 7th grade will begin Chapter 9A. This chapter focuses on movies, television programs, and entertainment. Students will also be working in groups to create their own movie trailer using the new grammar and vocabulary. The Chapter 9A quiz will be Friday, March 8th.


ELA - Mrs. Boyer
Literature: Students will be embarking on a mini-unit to focus on African American literature in association with Black History Month.
Writing: Students will be practicing their research skills by researching African American authors and completing three mini-activities with their research (powerpoint presentation, one to two page writing assignment, a historical quilt piece).
Grammar: We will be venturing into irregular verbs, intransitive and transitive verbs, and who vs whom, and which vs that.
Vocabulary: Unit 7, Quiz will be on 3/8/19. We will begin Unit 8 immediately after Spring Break.


Life Science - Ms. Hoffman
The 7th graders have been doing a great job learning about the interesting, and sometimes bizarre, world of invertebrates.  This week we learned about the Phylum Platyhelminthes (flatworms) and Nematoda (roundworms) and reviewed all the four simplest groups of invertebrates for our quiz.  The students also participated in an invertebrate lab using preserved specimens and slides. (See photos below.) Over the next two weeks, we will continue with the rest of our invertebrate Phyla, which are the mollusks (snails, clams and squid), annelids (segmented worms),  arthropods (insects, spiders, crustaceans) and echinoderms (sea stars, sea urchins and sand dollars). We will also have another invertebrate lab to see first hand the unique adaptations and differences these animals possess. Several of these preserved specimens and shells will come straight from our own wonderful natural resource, Tybee Island.  Our culminating unit test on all the eight invertebrate phyla will be Friday, 3/15, before our Spring Break. There may also be a pop quiz before this test.











Accelerated Math 7 - Mrs. Reardon
Next week in Accelerated Math 7, we will wrap up Chapter 7 by solving two-step equations and inequalities. On Wednesday and Thursday we will review for the Chapter 7 test that will take place on Friday (3/8).

ELA - Mrs. Guggenheim
LITERATURE: Work on research project. An outline and rubrics will be given and work will be done in the classroom and at home. Completed notecards are due 3/1. Slide presentations are due 3/11; oral presentations in class will begin on 3/14.
VOCABULARY: The Giver vocab list 2 will be given out on 3/4. The quiz is 3/12.
GRAMMAR: Verb unit. Quiz on verbs 3/15.
3RD TRIMESTER BOOK PROJECT
Students will be given a choice. They may choose to keep a Reading Log for 360 minutes as they did 1st trimester or create a card as they did 2nd trimester over one book. They must inform me by 2/22 of their choice, and that choice is final. They may not switch between the two midway through the trimester.

Earth Science - Mrs. Taylor
Rock Cycle, Minerals, and Weathering will be coming to close with their assessment March 5th. Please look at the pictures from our last lab where the students used Starbursts to represents Sediments and begin representing Sedimentary, Metamorphic and Igneous rock. Int the end, they ate the Igneous Rock!. Next up, Oceans!!!






















Ancient Civ -  Mr. O’Hayer
The week begins exploring Greek City-States. Sparta and Athens are two city-states that we will travel to and we will explore their influence on Greek culture and government. We will trace the development of early forms of democracy and citizenship in Greece. We will study new ways of governing and the impact these forms had on Greek citizens and civilizations as a whole. Our Chapter test will cover Lessons 2-4. The test is scheduled for Friday the 8th.


Spanish - Ms. Dubick
The 6th graders are learning ser vs estar, which are two verbs in Spanish that both mean “to be”.  They will be using these verbs, along with tener, to create physical and personality descriptions

Craft Club - Week of March 3rd
Overall in Savannah, our weather has been really pleasant during these winter months.  To help celebrate this winter season, craft club created colorful Winter Snowflakes.
