8TH GRADE WORLD WAR II and VETERAN’S NIGHT:
The 8th grade students are currently creating a collaborative memorial to the 75 million people that died during World War II. In an effort to share our work with our community, we will host an evening honoring veterans and the armed forces. The event will take place in Hancock Hall on Monday, May 13th at 6:00pm. At the event, we will have a guest speaker Col. Patricia Blassie, sister of the Vietnam Unknown soldier, Michael Blassie, buried at the Tomb of the Unknowns. We will also have a silent auction to sell the pieces of artwork that your students created. All the proceeds will go to veteran organizations chosen by the students. Please come support your students and feel free to bring guests!


BENEDICTINE ROBOTICS CAMP
BC is holding a robotics camp this summer for all rising 5th-10th grade boys and girls.  Click HERE for more information.




Each middle school student is required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year.  Please remember to list hours worked on a daily basis, do not log total sum of hours worked over an extended period of time.  See below for a few upcoming service opportunities. The Old Savannah City Mission needs volunteers for various positions.  The mission provides food, shelter, and clothing to the homeless.  For more information, contact Connell Stiles at 912-232-1979 or stiles@oscm.org.


America’s Second Harvest needs volunteers to help prepare monthly bags of food for senior citizens in our community.  Volunteers should arrive by 7:45 and must wear closed-toe shoes. Contact Bryce Seuntjens at bryce@helpendhunger.org for more information.

Algebra 1 - Mrs. Reardon
Next week, students will learn how to factor polynomials and special polynomials. On Wednesday and Thursday we will review for the Chapter 9 Test that will take place on Friday, May 10. The challenge problem that was distributed on Monday, April 29 is due on Monday, May 6.


Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
Next week, we will continue our Algebra 1 review by reviewing how to factor by a variety of methods including factoring trinomials, using the AC method, and the difference of two squares.  There will be a quiz on Thursday covering factoring. We will then review using the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations.


Geometry - Mr. Lanfear
Next week, we will continue Chapter 12 by learning how to find the volume of prisms and cylinders (12.4), pyramids and cones (12.5), and the surface area and volume of spheres (12.6).  There will be a quiz on Thursday covering 12.4-12.6. We will also discover the relationship between similar solids (12.7).


Physical Science - Ms. Hoffman
This week the eighth graders finished up learning the basics about electricity, including voltage, resistance, circuits, batteries and safety and had a quiz on this material Thursday, 5/2.  On Monday, 4/29, students also received an informational rubric (also posted on Google Classroom) for an Electricity Report Project. This three to four page paper (MLA format) will count as a test grade and a homework grade and is due on or before Monday, 5/13 by the end of the day.  Next Monday, 5/6, the students will spend working on this paper and then, for the rest of the week, focus on magnetism and how it is directly related to electricity. Students will participate in a voltage and electric current lab to learn about batteries and parallel/series circuits. We will also have a lab to observe the way magnets work and create electromagnets.  For the week of 5/13, we will finish up our electricity/magnetism unit and begin our review for exams.












English Language Arts - Mrs. Boyer
Literature: Students have completed both their Yom HaShoah Art/Writing Projects and their reading of Night. Students are currently working on their Formal Reports and they will have a test on 5/9 (announced over four weeks ago).



ELA Unit Project: Students have completed their formal reports and submissions. Grades will be inputted in the upcoming weeks. Their final assignment for the project is due on 5/14 which is the Reflection Journal.


Exam: Students will have an exam study guide given to them on 5/13. We will work in class over this study guide for the entire week before their exam.


Reading Log: Students will have a choice between turning in a Reading Log (like T1) or a Reading Card (like T2). Either one will be due on 5/14/19. This is a project grade. All rubrics have been posted on GC.


History & Gov’t II - Mrs. English
As we reach the end of the year there are several assignments coming up in my class. First, origami birds are due Monday, May 6th. Many students have already turned their 200 birds into me. A reminder that these will count as a test grade. Once students have completed their birds they will design and construct a piece of artwork out of them. The artwork will be displayed and sold at our World War II/Veterans Night  on Monday, May 13th at 6:00 pm. Students have an opportunity to earn bonus points by attending the event.  In addition to this project, students will be learning about the Civil Rights Movement. Readings and homework will come from Chapter 26.2. We will have a quiz on Wednesday, May 8th over Chapter 26.1-2. Looking forward to a great week!


Spanish - Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish the 8th grade will complete Chapter 5B and the test will be Tuesday, May 7th. Students will also begin Chapter 7A. This chapter discusses cooking instructions and advice, recipes and kitchen safety, negative tĂş commands, and the impersonal se. Students will also learn some new food vocabulary and review the use of por.

History & Gov’t I - Mrs. English
This week we will have our final President Madness debates. Students have worked very hard on their research for these mini-debates. We also will begin studying the Antebellum period in Chapter 11. Looking ahead, we will have a test over Chapter 10/11 on Friday, May 10th. Lastly, students should be working on completing their Summative Assessment Ancestry Interview. This interview should be recorded and uploaded to Google Drive by Tuesday, May 14th.


Spanish - Ms. Hughes
Next week in Spanish the 7th grade will continue working with the future tense.We will use this tense to talk about plans, professions, and make predictions. Students will investigate possible careers according to their likes and dislikes, and discuss ways to improve the environment for future generations. The grammar quiz will be Thursday, May, 9th.


ELA - Mrs. Boyer
Literature: Students are engaged in the final theme for the year: Sportsmanship.


Writing: Students will engage in a research paper which will be covering the topic of sports medicine. This paper will correspond with their book club reading. Students will also be completing a final project on the novel which will act as a test grade.


Vocabulary: There will be a test over Units 8, 9 & 10 on May 9th.

Life Science - Ms. Hoffman
The students have learned a lot about the skeletal system, including the functions of the skeleton, types and structure of the bones and joints found in our body, as well as, the name of over twenty of our bones.  We are excited to have a guest speaker on Thursday, 5/2 during our Eagle Op period. (See photos below.) Thank you to Mrs. Walmsley, an Occupational Therapist with Chatham Orthopedics for offering to help the students learn more about the importance of our skeletal system.  Next week the students will begin working in groups to research and develop power points, activities and study guides for some of our remaining body systems. The following week, they will present and “teach” these lessons to the other students. The body systems we will focus on will be the respiratory, nervous, and digestive systems and the senses.  This group project will count as one test and one classwork grade.










Accelerated Math 7 - Mrs. Reardon
Next week, students will review for their Chapter 9 test on Monday and take their Chapter 9 test on Tuesday, May 7th. On Wednesday, we will take a look at how to find tax and tips and then do a fun project with their favorite restaurant’s menu. The challenge problem that was distributed on Monday, April 29 is due on Monday, May 6.

ELA - Mrs. Guggenheim
LITERATURE: Continue reading The Diary of Anne Frank (play version). There will be an open book quiz over Act 2 Scenes 1 and 2 on 5/10.
I have handed out the exam project for this trimester. There will be no exam in ELA. Students have pledged not to discuss the project with their peers or others. They may ask me questions and ask for clarification. We will be working on the final project in class, but they have an outline on which to take their notes and jot down their ideas, and they may be working on that as we read the play. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for sending your child to me if they need help.


VOCABULARY: A test over the Latin/Greek roots from units 9-11 is scheduled for 5/9.


GRAMMAR: We will work on editing and proofing sentences and titles.


3RD TRIMESTER BOOK PROJECT
Students will be given a choice. They may choose to keep a Reading Log for 360 minutes as they did 1st trimester or create a card as they did 2nd trimester over one book. They must inform me by 2/22 of their choice, and that choice is final. They may not switch between the two midway through the trimester.
Earth Science - Mrs. Taylor
Sell a Planet!!! Students are working in pairs as a make up a real estate company and create a brochure to sell their planet. Then, they will use i-Movie on macs to make a commercial for their real estate company to sell their planet.  They will have a test on May 14th which will include the moon quiz, Bill Nye notes, Reading packet for astronomy (8 questions per read), and planet facts. The planet facts are taken from their previous project of scaling the planets. We will decide, as a class. what the main 2-3 facts of each planet for their test. Sell a planet project due 5,8. Last day to submit Extra Credit 5/10.


Ancient Civ -  Mr. O’Hayer
This week we will finish up our last chapter of the year. We will dive into Christianity and the Romans and finish up our study of ancient Rome with lesson 4- Rome’s Legacy. Our Chapter Test will be Wednesday the 8th. Following our test we will begin preparing for our Final Exam Project: Creating an ABC Book on Greece and Rome. Students will be paired up for this project and will present their final “editions” during exam week.


Spanish - Ms. Dubick
The 6th graders did great on their classroom projects!
Next week we will be moving on to using Gustar with food.  They will have a vocab quiz on Thursday May 9 and a test on Thursday May 16.
