Dates are subject to change; teachers will keep the calendar updated.
PLEASE SAVE THE DATE - SPRING PERFORMANCE

Each middle school student is required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year.  Please remember to list hours worked on a daily basis, do not log total sum of hours worked over an extended period of time.  See below for a few upcoming service opportunities. Click HERE for a log form.

HDS Extended Day Care needs volunteers to help out after school.  We are currently limiting this opportunity to 8th graders, with a possibility of opening it up to 6th and 7th graders later on.  If a student is interested in earning some community service hours, please contact Mrs. Mannarino.

The Old Savannah City Mission needs volunteers for various positions.  The mission provides food, shelter, and clothing to the homeless.  For more information, contact Connell Stiles at 912-232-1979 or stiles@oscm.org.

America’s Second Harvest needs volunteers to help prepare monthly bags of food for senior citizens in our community.  Volunteers should arrive by 7:45 and must wear closed-toe shoes. Contact Bryce Seuntjens at bryce@helpendhunger.org for more information.

We are excited to launch a Kindness Club for 6th grade students!  Meetings will take place at lunch once per week and are open to any 6th grader.  The purpose will be to promote acceptance, inclusion, and positivity throughout the school.

-Allison Maher, School Counselor

As always, middle school students that stay for extended should report to the appropriate classrooms to be signed-in immediately after school.  We have mandatory homework time from 3:30 to 4:00 and 4:00 to 5:30 students may choose to go to Hancock Hall for board games, outside to play, or stay in a quiet classroom to complete homework.  Student athletes staying at school until their practice/game are also required to report to extended for sign-in and work on homework. To be released for a practice/game, a parent or coach must sign the student/s out.  Click HERE to view this month’s Extended Newsletter!

If you have extra school-appropriate magazines lying around at home, please donate to us by dropping off with Mrs. Mannarino in the Middle School office!  For January, we will be working on an empathy activity and will need pictures of people showing emotions. Thank you in advance for your help!

They also used foam insulation to create a roller coaster with a minimum of one loop and one hill and then calculated the speed of their marble successfully traveling their coaster.
We also finished up with our Science Fair projects.  All projects were turned in this week and students began their class presentations on Friday and will finish up on Monday, 12/16. Parents are invited to an open house on Monday, 1/6/20 from 3 - 5pm to view all the science fair triptychs.  We will be having our school science fair judging on Wednesday, 1/15 and then those who have exceptional projects will be advancing to the regional science fair at Savannah State University on Wednesday, 2/5.
Our next focus in science for next week is learning about balanced/unbalanced forces, gravity and friction.  We will also have a friction lab comparing static and kinetic friction and the effect the type of surface has on these values. Our next quiz has been moved until after the holiday break and the new date is Thursday, 1/9/20.

Vocab and grammar quiz: December 18th

I hope everyone has a wonderful winter break! Safe travels & warm wishes over the holidays.

ELA - Mrs. Boyer
Literature: Students have been engaging in a multimedia presentation which will act as their Final over their Book Club novels. The students will orally present their projects. This project allows for the students to critically analyze theme, creatively and analytically design a PowerPoint, practice their oratory skills, and apply their learning to present day issues.

Vocabulary: Students are engaging with Unit 4; the quiz is on 12/17. Students have their vocabulary workbooks; this workbook will be collected in May and used during their 8th grade year as well.

Grammar: Students will soon begin a unit on Phrases after the winter holiday! Please send your child in for morning help if needed. Also, I always post extra resources in GC such as practice sheets, IXL links, Youtube videos, etc. Grammar is a difficult concept to grasp which means your child needs to identify their learning style and use that to succeed in regards to these concepts. I have found that my 7th grade students need focused units instead of having days assigned to grammar, vocab, literature, etc. Therefore, when we return I will spend two-three weeks on teaching vocab unit 5 and phrases before we begin another novel. However, I will ask that the students begin reading their Choice novel during the focused grammar and vocab weeks.

Life Science - Mrs. DuRant
Next week in Life Science, students will work on an in class project researching an aspect of the skeletal system such as a disease, types of joints, structure of bones, etc.  On Wednesday, we will review for a test on the skeletal system. Skeletal System test will be Thursday, December 19th. We will wrap up the last day of school for 2019 with fun holiday activities on Friday. Wishing your family a safe and relaxing holiday break!

Next week in Pre-Algebra, we will continue Chapter 6 by learning how to convert units in ratios (6.1), writing and solving proportions (6.2), and solving proportions using cross products (6.3).

ELA - Mrs. Sasser
Next week, students will complete their final project on Phineas Gage and turn it in on Wednesday. They have been creating a text features magazine around a particular topic related to the book. This is a creative and writing intensive project. While students have had class time to work on this assignment, they should also be working diligently at home and review the rubric regularly to make sure they are completing all pieces and parts. As always, students may come in early any morning to chat with me about their project and their written portions checked over.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we will work on some grammar review concepts (parts of speech, sentence types and purposes, and basic punctuation). Students should be reviewing their grammar concepts regularly on IXL. I have posted links to important lesson on Google classroom.

Earth Science - Mrs. Hoffman
See the photos below of some of the presentations and the interesting projects the students presented for their energy projects.  They chose an energy source and either wrote a report, produced a poster or created a 3-D display showing all their information.  All of them, as you can see, did a wonderful job.
This week in science we finished up some basic information on maps and learned about the theory of continental drift.  The students even put together a “puzzle” of Pangea, the single landmass believed to have existed over 200 million years ago.  (See photos below.) Our week finished up with a quiz on the layers of the earth and continental drift. We will continue learning about the theory of plate tectonics next week, including information on seafloor spreading and the different movements of our tectonic plates.   Our unit test on all this information will be Thursday, 12/19 before the winter holiday break.

Earth Science - Mrs. DuRant
Next week in Earth Science, students will conclude their unit on topographic maps.  We will review on Tuesday and take the unit test on Wednesday, December 18th. Wishing your family a safe and relaxing holiday break!

Ancient Civ -  Mr. O’Hayer
This week we finish our Unit on Comparative Religions. This lesson offers a starting point for exploring religions and faith traditions. Students will compare and contrast religious belief systems, origins, and faith traditions. This Unit plan is meant to give students a basic understanding of five world religions: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism. The final religion we will study is Islam. We will study key ideas, key people, origins and current areas where the religion is practiced, and the culture of the religion. Our Quiz on Islam will be on Tuesday the 17th.

Spanish - Mr. Alexander
We will begin the week by reviewing the test from the 13th. Next we will review for our retakes of the spelling and body parts quizzes.  The previous grades on these quizzes will be counted as classwork grades; and retakes will count as quiz grades. Be sure to study hard as there will be no more second chances!  We will also discuss some holiday traditions and vocabulary from Latinamerica as we prepare for the holiday break.

**Please remind your child(ren) that the weekly participation grade now counts off 5pts per infraction - distracting behaviour, non-participation, etc. Each student was given a copy of the syllabus as well as the list of new rules and procedures and told to keep them in their binders.**
