SHELTERED IN PLACE COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
The best opportunities for service during these times come through supporting family.  Student service to family that goes beyond normal expectations will be recognized for community service hours.  This might include helping grandparents, tutoring younger siblings or cousins, or baby sitting so parents can work from home.  When these hours are earned please communicate that to Mrs. Mannarino following the standard protocol.

As we continue to go through this pandemic, many caregivers continue to seek information about how to stay emotionally healthy for both themselves and their children.  Here are some resources:

I am available to students and parents at amaher@hancockdayschool.org.  If needed, I can provide video support to you or your student.  Please feel free to reach out!

Algebra 1 - Mr. Cargile
Congratulations, and well done! I think of how much we have learned since the beginning of the school year and my heart swells with the pride I have in you, your efforts, and your accomplishments. Next week, we will have one final class that meets on Monday!

Geometry - Mr. Lanfear
What an incredible year!  I am so proud of how all the students conducted themselves both in person and in the eLearning environment!  Next week, we will have one final class that meets on Monday, and we will meet to wrap up the year and discuss next steps in high school.

Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
What an incredible year!  I am so proud of how all the students conducted themselves both in person and in the eLearning environment!  Next week, we will have one final class that meets on Monday, and we will meet to wrap up the year and discuss next steps.

Physical Science - Ms. Hoffman
WE SURVIVED!! Our HDS students are just the BEST and I will be bragging to all my teacher friends about the OUTSTANDING job my 8th graders did over the last two months.  They came to class everyday (unless major technical issues or illness), never complained (to me, at least) and overall, completed all their assignments.  I also felt we were able to continue our learning (albeit at a slower pace due to limited class time) and they are all prepared for high school science. We have covered quite a lot this year in Physical Science, delving into both Chemistry and Physics.  I will miss all of my students terribly and wish everyone a wonderful, restful and safe summer break.  The eighth graders have learned so much over the three years I have taught (most of) them and by now they all realize that science is EVERYWHERE!  We are finishing up our school year with our last class on Tuesday 5/19 where we will have a quiz on electricity.  We will have a short optional Zoom review session on Monday 5/18 from 11:30 - noon.  See Google Classroom for the link.

ELA - Mrs. Boyer
(After students have submitted their final drafts of their paper…) We are done! Thank goodness! We were thrown so many curve balls, but your children are better for it! They have questioned censorship with Ray Bradbury, discussed racial and identity issues with Harper Lee, critiqued governments with George Orwell, fought in Verona with Shakespeare, cried with Elie Wiesel. Your children are prepared to argue any point, write pages of discussion, and annotate high school novels. I cannot wait to see how you soar in your 9th grade year!

History & Gov’t II - Mrs. Robinson
I can’t believe we are at the end of the year! It was not the end to the year we imagined, but the students really took it in stride. I have so enjoyed getting to know your students this year and wish them the best of luck as they move on to their next adventure! Next week we will be wrapping up a few Cold War topics and then we will be done for the year. They have blown me away with their critical thinking, creativity and discussion skills. I hope they take some of what they have learned on to the next chapter of their lives. I look forward to celebrating your students next week at graduation!

8th grade Spanish - Ms. Hill
Wow! It’s hard to believe that this year is coming to an end. I am so proud of all of you and wish you the best in high school and in the future in general. We will be wrapping up our year and discussing review and enrichment activities and resources you can use over the summer to prepare for high school.

History & Gov’t I - Mrs. Robinson
We have made it to the end of the year! It is not what we imagined it would be, but the 7th grade class really took this change in stride and continued to thrive in this strange online environment. I have so enjoyed getting to know the students this year and am really looking forward to a great 8th grade year with them! They have grown so much this year in their critical thinking, presentation skills and discussion skills, it is setting us up for an excellent 8th grade year. I hope everyone enjoys the summer, and can’t wait to have everyone back in the fall!

7th grade Spanish - Ms. Hill
Wow! It’s hard to believe that this year is coming to a close. We will be wrapping up our year and talking about enrichment and review activities that students can do over the summer to prepare for next school year.

ELA - Mrs. Boyer
(After turning in your final edit of your writing piece on Tuesday…) We are done! It has been such a pleasant year, and I am so excited to see how you mature and engage in your 8th grade ELA course! This year I have given you the freedom to learn how to engage with a novel, discover the types of literature you enjoy, write different pieces, and interact with grammar and vocabulary! Get ready for 8th! Let’s really challenge those skills! :) Get ready to analyze, write, and discuss all year! :)

Have a great summer!

Summer Reading will be out next week! We will discuss in class on 5/19, it will be handed to you in a packet on 5/21, on your new 8th grade Google classroom, and on the HDS website! :) (I will also email it to your parents!)

Life Science - Mrs. DuRant
This has been a wonderful year!  It had a different ending than we expected, however I have to commend each and every one of you for your diligence and positive attitude throughout this time of distance learning.  We will have our last LifeScience class on Monday where we will present your Earth’s Biomes Storybook Projects, review the year, play a game or two, and look to next year. Please join the student support session on Wednesday if you have any questions about assignments, as we wrap up the year.

ELA - Mrs. Sasser
This week, students will round out the year by taking a short course survey and we will discuss summer reading assignments for 7th grade.
It has been such a pleasure to teach this 6th grade class and I look forward to seeing them again in the fall! Enjoy a restful and relaxing summer!

Ancient Civ -  Mr. O’Hayer
The last week of school!!! It sure has been one for the ages. We will meet for our last class on Tuesday. We will review the year and hit on major themes that we discussed and how these themes will affect their History moving forward to next year.

Spanish - Mr. Alexander
I have been quite impressed with the diligence of each of my students in these strange times.  The cooperation of all has contributed to the smooth transition to distance learning.  I have enjoyed getting to know each of your young learners and I hope they have benefited from our time together.  As this is our final week of classes, we will be having a comprehensive grammar test - keep studying!  Over the summer please encourage your child(ren) to continue using ‘duolingo’ and IXL (they may go beyond unit 2).
