Different subjects will appear in different colors:

History is black, Science is green, ELA is blue, Spanish is red, and Math is pink.

Please bear in mind that Middle School Assessments may be added, removed, or changed at any time.  This Sheet will always be up to date, however - once a teacher assigns or adjusts an assessment, this Sheet will reflect that change.

Each middle school student is required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year.  Please remember to list hours worked on a daily basis, do not log the total sum of hours worked over an extended period of time.  See below for a few upcoming service opportunities.  Click HERE for a log form.

NEW ON CAMPUS COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY!

Good environmental practices begin locally.  We are looking for student volunteers to give up some time each week during their Eagle Op period to green up our campus.  Each week Mr. Crawford will coordinate projects that will enhance the beauty and functionality of our campus environment.  Students who wish to volunteer should email Mr. Crawford at hcrawford@hancockdayschool.org.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY!

We have had great success at securing volunteers to escort HRB PK - 2nd grade students during morning carpool!  Because of this, we will limit one day a week per student.  Reminder: duty hours are 7:45 - 8:10.  ½ hour of community service credit each day.  Please keep track of the weather and dress appropriately. Students should keep a log of their hours on the community service form. If you are interested see Mrs. Mannarino to sign up!

TIP #31: TRY HARDER IN YOUR LEAST FAVORITE CLASS.

  • Chances are, you have at least one class you are not as confident in. Try harder in that class, or those classes, and you’re less likely to fail.

The weather has warmed up and you may find your student’s motivation (as well as your own) waning as the clock ticks closer to summer.  However, it is a great time to teach children about diligence and working hard all the way up to the end of the school year.  Here are some tips to curb Spring Fever:

There will be a TAKE HOME quiz on Act IV & V on May 18th.

Memorization Project: Students have been given about five sections of 14-17 lines to memorize from Romeo and Juliet. The memorization is due by May 12th. This will act as one of the final projects for the unit/trimester. The assignment has been posted in GC for more information. :) They will also need an old/new blank t-shirt of any color.

Romeo & Juliet will bring us to the end of T3.Their exam will be the unit test for Romeo & Juliet, and an essay regarding the theme from all novels of the year.

*It is critically important that all 8th graders stick with the timelines I give them for reading and projects. Also, if students are spending more than 25-35 minutes on ELA homework, please send them to me in the morning. Students in the 8th grade really need to pay attention to their time management skills before moving forward to 9th grade.*

HIGH SCHOOL SPANISH - MRS. SALE

Hola….we will begin the week with the irregular preterite forms IR & SER. This concept will continue throughout Wednesday.  On Thursday, the students will work on their ‘’study guide’’ for next week’s test.  We will close the week with a game of BINGO/review game.

This week in science students focused on learning the basic parts of the eye and how we see images.  We also looked at various examples of optical illusions and discovered the differences between colors of light (blue, red, green) and colors of pigment (cyan, magenta, yellow).  Students then explored primary and secondary colors with a rainbow lab and even designed their own variations of color during a run rainbow lab.  (Look for photos next week.) Next week we will investigate mirrors and lenses, including another interactive lab.  The unit test for EM spectrum/ Light has been moved to Monday, 5/10/21.

Upcoming!

Summer Reading!

I will be handing out Summer Reading in the next few weeks. I have a few copies of the novels (2) being assigned. Students may have them on a first come first serve basis.

ELA - MRS. SASSER

Final project due dates for the multi-genre project have been moved Monday, 5/3. All projects must be completed when students walk into class.

We will begin working in literature circle groups to read Jason Reynolds “A Tale Told in Ten Blocks.” We will analyze the question: What makes a good story? We will also discuss how to create vignettes from personal experiences.

A reminder about any and all projects in ELA: projects in my class are designed to help students think critically and not just memorize information. Rather, I want them learning how to apply what they’ve learned. They are given detailed rubrics with checklists and a breakdown of my expectations. They should consult their rubric regularly while working on their project. The bulk of ELA projects are completed in class; they are given ample time and multiple class periods where they are strictly working on their project. Therefore, if students use their time wisely, they should have only minimal parts to complete at home.

LIFE SCIENCE - MRS. DURANT

This week in Life Science, students will study various symbiotic relationships by focusing on mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism found on a coral reef. They will also be researching the major land biomes and creating a digital storybook.  This is an in-class assignment which is due Friday, May 7.

Next week in Pre-Algebra, we will complete Chapter 9 by learning about real numbers such as rational and irrational numbers (9.4).  There will be a day of review on Tuesday and the Chapter 9.1-9.4 test on Wednesday.  We will then begin Chapter 10 by learning about angles and perimeters of triangles (10.1).

EARTH SCIENCE - MS. HOFFMAN

Astronomy involves so many different topics.  Students have been asking some great questions and learning a lot.  This week we have focused on Earth’s only natural satellite, the moon, focusing on its basic features and the moon phases.  We also discussed information about achievements in early space exploration and watched examples of historic photos and video clips.  We then compared solar and lunar eclipses.  Our first Astronomy quiz will be next Tuesday, 5/4/21.

Next week, after our quiz, we will continue increasing our knowledge of our solar system with information on the Sun.  We will also have an interactive lab illustrating the distances between planets. Early next week, students will also receive the rubric for our Solar System Trading Cards project that will be due on Friday 5/14/21.  There will also be a progress check for this assignment on Monday 5/10/21. This project will be completed at home and will count as one TEST grade and TWO homework grades.

EARTH SCIENCE - MRS. DURANT

This week in Earth Science, students will begin their final unit of the year - Astronomy! This is an exciting unit with so much to explore.  We will begin by studying Earth’s motion followed by moon phases. Students will have a quiz on 5/11.

ELA - MRS. SASSER

Final unit test on The Outsiders will be on Tuesday 5/4.

We will begin working on a character analysis essay on Wednesday. Students will identify a character they liked most from the novel The Outsiders and identify traits about their chosen character. They will draw on textual evidence to support their ideas and construct a four paragraph formal essay.

Students have been taught the format for an essay and thesis statements. This is material I expect them to know as we begin writing next week. It would be wise to review these key concepts (notes in their binder) so they don’t fall behind when we being writing.

Reading Reminder: As with any novel study, students will have guided questions to complete for each section. These should be answered in complete, thorough sentences, as it will serve as their study guide for their quizzes and final test. It is essential that students keep up with the assigned reading if they want to be successful on our in class assignments.

All reading assignments are posted on my classroom board and on Google Classroom daily. Students should check Google Classroom every single day.
