Different subjects will appear in different colors:

History is black, Science is green, ELA is blue, Spanish is red, and Math is pink.

TIP #33: LEARNING HOW TO LEARN

  • Learning how to learn is the most important thing you will ever learn - Janet Piskurich

The weather has warmed up and you may find your student’s motivation (as well as your own) waning as the clock ticks closer to summer.  However, it is a great time to teach children about diligence and working hard all the way up to the end of the school year.  Here are some tips to curb Spring Fever:

How to Help Your Child Focus on School and Avoid Spring Fever

ALGEBRA - MRS. SMOAK

Next week, we will continue working on Chapter 9 about polynomials. We will look at special types of polynomials: perfect squares and difference of squares (9.4). We will then move into how to factor quadratic equations by completing the square and then solve them (9.5). The next assessment will be Friday May 14.

GEOMETRY - MR. LANFEAR

Next week in Geometry, we will complete Chapter 12 by having a day of review on Monday and the Chapter 12 test on Tuesday.  Then we will begin our trimester 3 exam review!

ELA - MRS. BOYER

This week students are spending all week working on their final projects for Romeo & Juliet. We will also take this time to review for exams. Students already have many study guides from which to guide them, but I will be giving them another exam outline/study guide.

Romeo & Juliet will bring us to the end of T3.Their exam will be the unit test for Romeo & Juliet, and an essay regarding the theme from all novels of the year.

*It is critically important that all 8th graders stick with the timelines I give them for reading and projects. Also, if students are spending more than 25-35 minutes on ELA homework, please send them to me in the morning. Students in the 8th grade really need to pay attention to their time management skills before moving forward to 9th grade.*

PHYSICAL SCIENCE - MS. HOFFMAN

Our week in 8th grade science has been “electrifying!” The students have learned about static electricity, static discharge, electrical circuits and currents, voltage and resistance.  They also participated in an interactive lab to determine how voltage affects the brightness of a light bulb and also constructed and compared parallel and series circuits.  (See some of our photos below.)  Students should be working at home on their electricity exam project.  During this project students will choose between a written report or creating a test (with answer key) to demonstrate their knowledge of electricity.  They are using their notes, worksheets, textbook and workbook.   A progress check will be next TUESDAY, 5/18  and a PRINTED copy of their final project will be due on our last day of regular classes, MONDAY, 5/24/21.

Next week the students will work in small groups to research, design and deliver to the class a mini-lesson on magnetism.  This in-class project will include answering research questions and then creating a visual aid, review handout and hands-on activity to be taught to the rest of the students.  This project will also count as the final test grade for the trimester.

Upcoming!

Summer Reading!

I will be handing out 8th grade Summer Reading in the next few weeks. I have a few copies of the novels (2) being assigned. Students may have them on a first come first serve basis.

ELA - MRS. SASSER

Students will spend this week finishing their exam project. They will complete their children’s books, adding the text, images, and creating a cover for their books. At the end of the week, they will share their stories with the lower school kids!

It is essential that students use their time management skills to complete this project. Because they are being given time in History, ELA, and Art, it is expected that these projects look polished and well done.

Final projects are due by the end of class on Thursday 5/20.

A reminder about any and all projects in ELA: projects in my class are designed to help students think critically and not just memorize information. Rather, I want them learning how to apply what they’ve learned. They are given detailed rubrics with checklists and a breakdown of my expectations. They should consult their rubric regularly while working on their project. The bulk of ELA projects are completed in class; they are given ample time and multiple class periods where they are strictly working on their project. Therefore, if students use their time wisely, they should have only minimal parts to complete at home.

Next week in Life Science, we will have an overview of Protists and Fungi. We will spend the remainder of the week reviewing for the third trimester final exam which will include the following topics: Circulatory System, Respiratory System, Bacteria and Viruses, and Ecosystems and Biomes. This week we discussed galaxies and the life cycle of stars and began the study guide for the unit test, which will be on Tuesday, 5/18/21.  Students have also been working on their Astronomy Alphabet book for the last few weeks.  This is due on Monday, 5/17/21 and winners in both classes with the most vocabulary words will win full-size candy bars.  All of these due dates and assignment information is also found on Google Classroom under the topic Astronomy.  Just a reminder that our Trimester 3 exam will be on Tuesday, 5/25 and will cover Oceans and Astronomy.

Please remind your child to check the google classroom daily for updates and additional study material.

ELA - MRS. SASSER

Final essays for The Outsiders will be due Monday 5/17.This weekend, students should make any final revisions they did not finish in class. I would recommend students read over their essays outloud to their parents. This will help them identify grammatical, organizational, and flow issues. Final, printed, color-coded essays are due at the beginning of class on Monday. Late essays and missing rubrics will be -10 points.

Later in the week, students will watch West Side Story. They will compare and contrast this film with the novel The Outsiders. At the end of the week, students will work with a partner to complete a one-pager in-class project. This project will be due Monday 5/24.

Reading Reminder: As with any novel study, students will have guided questions to complete for each section. These should be answered in complete, thorough sentences, as it will serve as their study guide for their quizzes and final test. It is essential that students keep up with the assigned reading if they want to be successful on our in class assignments.

All reading assignments are posted on my classroom board and on Google Classroom daily. Students should check Google Classroom every single day.

A reminder about any and all projects in ELA: projects in my class are designed to help students think critically and not just memorize information. Rather, I want them learning how to apply what they’ve learned. They are given detailed rubrics with checklists and a breakdown of my expectations.
