Algebra I - Mr. Scordato
Welcome to the start of what I am certain will be a fantastic school year. We will continue to focus on team-building as the students work on word problems and math puzzles together. Students will also review math vocabulary, solving equations, and writing expressions to describe real-world situations.

Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
Welcome back!!!  We are so excited to see the students come back and fill the halls with energy and excitement!  Next week in Advanced Algebra, we will continue Chapter 9.  We will learn how to solve polynomial equations that are already factored (9.4), factor trinomials (9.5), factor the difference of two squares (9.7), and factor by grouping (9.8).  There will be a quiz on Tuesday covering 9.1-9.4.

Geometry - Mr. Lanfear
Welcome back!!!  We are so excited to see the students come back and fill the halls with energy and excitement!  Next week in Geometry, we will continue Chapter 1 by learning about the difference between postulates and theorems (1.2), how to use the midpoint and distance formulas (1.3), different angle types (1.4-1.5), and identifying polygons (1.6).  There will be a quiz on Friday covering 1.1-1.5.

Physical Science - Ms. G
Welcome to 8th Grade Physical Science! Please click here to view our Weekly Overview as we dive into scientific methodology & writing.

ELA - Ms. Hall
Welcome back to school! I’m so excited to have the pleasure of teaching ELA to 8th grade. We’re going to be spending the next week getting to know each other, our classroom routines, and reviewing our grammar rules! Before we can even think about writing our summer reading paper together, we need to go over the basic rules of writing and the English language. After we spend a week or so accomplishing this together, we’ll hop into our first novel of the year!

US History - Mr. Saviskas
Its wonderful to be back! History this year is going to be so much fun. I am elated to be teaching the kids and I know they are also excited for the school year. We will start next week by working on understanding emails and how to write proper, professional emails. Later in the week we will start our Governments unit by talking about George Orwell’s Animal Farm. I understand the students read it over the summer so we will be going over it to enhance our understanding of the material.

High School Spanish - Mr. De Cardenas
Welcome back. I am so happy to have kids filling the rooms and halls with positivity and good energy again. This will be a terrific year. During the next week we'll be learning how to use Present Continuous Tense in Spanish language. The kids will first be exposed to an advanced grammar content which will allow them to master this grammar tense and ultimately this will represent growth for their talkative skills which we’ll be practicing in class. Lots of conversational and reading comprehension exercises will be done as well. This is gonna be so much fun.

ELA - Ms. Ferkol

Welcome back, everyone! It is so lovely to see everyone’s faces and feel their energy again! Next week, we will continue to reacquaint ourselves with classroom policies and procedures as we take our first steps into the content of this year! On Monday, 8/19, students will have a Socratic Seminar over the material from their summer reading novel. The students will be asked to discuss 2 key questions: 1. What does Bicycle’s journey across the country reveal about the importance of independence and self-discovery in personal growth? 2. How do the characters Bicycle meets along her journey influence her understanding of friendship and community? The rest of the week will consist of a mini “Back-to-School Bootcamp” to refresh our knowledge of foundational writing skills. These skills will be quizzed on Friday, 8/23, before diving into our first writing unit of the year!

ELA - Ms. Hall
Welcome back to school! I’m so excited to have the pleasure of teaching ELA to 7th grade. We’re going to be spending the next week getting to know each other, our classroom routines, and reviewing our grammar rules! It’s very important that our class understands the basics of the English language before we start any form of a writing assignment. Afterwards, we’ll start moving into our first novel of the year!

American History - Mr. O’Hayer

Welcome Back! I am looking forward to another awesome school year in Middle School. Next week in American History we will continue our study of “Why and How” we study history. We will also finish up our review of the class syllabus and policies and procedures we will use this year in American History.

American History- Mr. Saviskas
Glad to be back! I am so excited for another year. Next week we will be starting with why History is important. This will be an introductory lecture on the subject and should serve as an easy introduction to how my class normally works. Next Friday we will have a short quiz on the lecture material.

Advanced Spanish - Mr. Jones

Thank you for entrusting me again with the education of your children as I look forward to instilling a new layer of self within our students – a language! As we intend to create a smoother transition between 6th-8th Grade Spanish, Mr. De Cardenas and I are eager to work closely together on said curriculum to ensure students receive a compounding language education in which knowledge and skills are not repeated yearly but rather incrementally built upon. Our systematic, step-by-step approach will produce Spanish speakers and I am keen to demonstrate this as the year goes on. Welcome back!

Welcome back. I am so happy to have kids filling the rooms and halls with positivity and good energy again. This will be a terrific year. During the next week we'll be reviewing the content previously learned by the student last year. We will be working with verb conjugations in simple present tense and also with phrases and grammatical structures previously mastered which will mark the beginning of the student’s growth in Spanish language this year. I'm excited to see how much they will grow.

Welcome, everyone, to a new and exciting year in middle school! This week we will be diving into some grammar and writing basics with a Back-to-School Bootcamp! We will be solidifying our knowledge about concepts such as sentence structure, punctuation, and adding good detail. This work will be continued throughout the school year and woven into many of our writing assignments and projects; however, this week will really allow us to dig a little deeper and spend intentional time ensuring a solid foundation on which to build.

World History - Mr. O’Hayer
Welcome to Middle School! I am looking forward to an awesome school year in Middle School. Next week in World History we will continue our study of “Why and How” we study history. We will also finish up our review of the class syllabus and policies and procedures we will use this year in World History.

Intro to Spanish - Mr.
Our systematic, step-by-step approach will produce Spanish speakers and I am keen to demonstrate this as the year unfolds. Welcome back!

  • Importantly, 6th Grade Spanish will use a textbook in which there is no English! Being said, I expect students to find this challenging at the beginning and so our first vocabulary quiz (date to be announced) will consist of keywords used throughout the textbook that give instructions on activities. Our pace will increase after a brief time in which I will support our students as they familiarize themselves with the immersion of my communicative approach. Please, contact me via djones@hancockdayschool.org and I will assist!

Good day HDS families!

Excited to be back in the Eagle Studio. Great new tables and stools for students to create our first week of work themed “Eagle Spirit”. Sixth grade will build a contemporary eagle using the triangle shape and school colors. Seventh grade will illustrate impressions of favorite campus spots with unique angels and dots in the style of David Hockney. Eighth grade students will observe contour lines of Savannah palms where positive and negative space create balance in composition.
