  • you should only be sending recommendations to current teachers

  • we will not be sending transcripts until after T1 grades have been posted (after November 8)

Fall sports officially are over and the winter season has begun!

Congrats to the tennis team, which won the City Championships in both boys' and girls' divisions. There are 5 matches held in the finals to determine the winner of the top team and it's the best out of those 5 matches,  so you need to win at least 3-2. Well, both the boys and the girl's squads won 4 matches to 1 completely dominating their 2nd-place opponent !

JV Football had a great year and finished second to a much physically bigger SJS team. “The guys never gave up and played hard to the end,” Coach Brooks Ziegler told them and he was so right!

The week prior your Eagles beat/  SCPS 24-0 to advance!

6th Grade volleyball also captured second place

I WOULD ENCOURAGE ALL PARENTS TO READ ARTICLES ON THE PROS AND CONS OF SPECIALIZING IN ONE SPORT!

Tip #6 What's a Reasonable Homework Break?

Both your body and brain need frequent refreshers. Set another timer for five minutes, then do jumping jacks, run in place, or stretch. Start another 30-minute block of homework. This sounds too simple to work, but these breaks keep you sharp to get your work done faster. After two weeks, you will find that these five-minute blocks will significantly reduce procrastination.

Our virtues of the month are respect and responsibility! A skill that is key to both of these is effective problem solving skills. One of my favorite ways to encourage this is to “talk out loud” and let your student hear the inner dialogue that you have when you run into an issue. They will start to incorporate this “self talk” to help solve obstacles they encounter which will  lead to better choices that support respect and responsibility.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have this year. amaher@hancockdayschool.org

Each middle school student is required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year.  Please remember to check this area of the blog for opportunities. Click HERE for a log form or see Mrs. Mannarino in the office.

Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Advanced Algebra, we will continue Chapter 11 by having a quiz on Monday covering section 11.2 (simplifying radical expressions).  We will have a day of review on Tuesday and the 11.1-11.2 test on Wednesday.  Then, we will begin the second part of Chapter 11 by learning how to solve radical equations (11.3).

Geometry - Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Geometry, we will complete Chapter 4 by learning how to perform translations, reflections, and rotations (4.8).  There will be a day of review on Tuesday and the Chapter 4 test on Wednesday.  We will then begin Chapter 5 by learning about midsegments of triangles (5.1) and perpendicular bisectors (5.2).

Physical Science - Ms. Harmon
Next week we will be continuing our lesson on Elements and Chemical Bonds and will start our lesson on chemical reactions and equations.

ELA - Ms. Hall

On Monday, we will be finishing reading To Kill a Mockingbird! They will have time to review and study. Wednesday (11/6), students will have a quiz over Part 2 of the novel. The rest of the week will be filled with choice activities to review and assess their understanding of the novel!

US History - Mr. Saviskas
We have finished covering the lead-up to the Civil War and are now starting the Civil War proper. First we will dive into the technology and how wars were fought back then. Afterwards we will talk about the first two years of the war and the goals of both sides. It should be a fun and informative week!

High School Spanish - Mr. De Cardenas

The mastery shown by the students using the Past Progressive Tense in Spanish in real time and spontaneously is absolutely amazing. The students totally exceeded my expectations. I am so proud of them.

Next week we will finalize with Unit 3. We will have our last General Review and also a speaking class to give the students the opportunity to demonstrate once again their abilities and conversational progress. Then we will have the last assessment of this unit (Test on unit 3).

Algebra I - Mr. Scordato
Students will be taking a more in-depth look at different forms of Linear Functions called Standard Form and Point-Slope Form. They will have practice graphing digitally as well as with ruler and pencil.

Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Pre-Algebra, we will continue Chapter 4 by learning how to find the greatest common factor (GCF) of numbers and monomials (4.2), make equivalent fractions (4.3), and find the least common multiple (LCM) of numbers and monomials (4.4).  We will have a day of review on Friday to get us ready for the 4.1-4.4 test the following Tuesday.

Life Science - Ms. Harmon
We will be starting our lesson on cell transport and will start presenting our Edible Cell Projects. It may be presented ANY day between (Monday- Friday) Nov 4-Nov 8. Students must present the day they bring in the project because there is limited space available in the refrigerator.

Life Science - Mrs. Swanner
Next week, we will have a photosynthesis lab, then begin our study of cell differentiation.

ELA - Ms. Ferkol

Next week, we will really be digging into the novel through in-class reading. As we near the end of the novel, it’s important that students begin to formulate their claims about pertinent themes and symbols that represent the important ideas being demonstrated. We will do this through read-aloud style class periods and partner reads for specified text evidence. Students should anticipate their second quiz covering content through page 224 on Tuesday, November 5th!

**This novel is available through Audible for students to listen to while they annotate/read! When students have the opportunity to read independently in class, they may choose to listen along with their reading (via Chromebook, not cell phone). Should your child want to utilize this option they must have CORDED headphones, not bluetooth, per the school policy! Please make sure the connector fits into the headphone jack of the Chromebook :)

ELA - Ms. Hall
As we move into next week, students will be spending some time reading in-class either with the teacher or on their own. They should be using this time to work on their analysis skills to evaluate the main ideas and themes being utilized. They will have a quiz covering the second part of the novel on Tuesday (11/5).

American History - Mr. O’Hayer

Next week in American History we will continue our study of the American Revolution. We will identify the causes and events leading up to the War and summarize the major events, battles,  and key participants of the Revolution.

American History- Mr. Saviskas
We have been delayed in watching the Patriot last week so we will be starting it next week on either Tuesday or Wednesday. I have already sent an email out to parents making sure they are comfortable with their child watching the film. If they are not I will have an alternate assignment prepared. As a film The Patriot does wonders illustrating the period and serves as an excellent introduction to the Revolution. We will also be starting our notes on the topic next week so students have full context for the film.

Advanced Spanish - Mr. Jones

We will have our next test on 8 November. Students will need to know the meaning and present tense conjugations of the verbs: leer, aprender, hacer, ver, ir, hablar, escuchar, escribir, buscar, visitar, & practicar. We will continue to review the following information that will also be on the test: masculine/feminine nouns with definite articles (i.g. el libro/la botella), and most importantly the verb querer (to want) plus the prepositions para & porque. Students should look to the handouts provided for study materials (p.24 #2a-b, 3a / p.26 #5a, 6a-c)

X + 1 = Fluency

Advanced Spanish - Mr. De Cardenas

Our quiz will be on 22 Oct, pushed forward one day to allow for review, and will cover - Prepositions: para + infinitivo & porque + verbo conjugado - What these verbs mean: trabajar, leer, estudiar, hablar, querer, comer, aprender, hacer, ir, salir, escuchar, comprar, & comprender - Matching the conjugated forms of these verbs with the corresponding subject pronouns. For the rest of the week, we will review definite articles before diving into more preposition and quantifier work. On Friday, we will begin a series entirely in Spanish designed to learn the language with accompanying comprehension questions. This will become a weekly occurrence.

Accelerated Math - Mr. Scordato

We have just started our unit on ratios and will be focusing on problem-solving strategies using ratio tables. Since some of the examples we will be looking at involve adjusting recipes, I hope we have some eager mathematician-chefs willing to help prepare your holiday meals.

Earth Science - Mrs. Swanner
Next week, continue our study of Climate with an emphasis on greenhouse gases.

ELA - Ms. Ferkol
This week, students will work on finishing their first novel in 6th Grade ELA! Woohoo! We will work this week on finishing our vocabulary and comprehension questions through the end of the book and have some fun activities to get our brains thinking about themes, conflicts, and major character/plot events throughout the novel. On Friday, students will be introduced to their final group projects which they will complete the following week.

Students will have their third quiz covering this content and vocabulary from Chapters 7-9 on Tuesday, November 5th. A study guide will be posted on Google Classroom!

**As we read, I am posting the Youtube read-alouds for this novel. When students have the opportunity to read independently in class, they may choose to listen along with their reading–should your child want to utilize this option they must have CORDED headphones, not bluetooth, per the school policy! Please make sure the connector fits into the headphone jack of the Chromebook :)

World History - Mr. O’Hayer
Next week in World History students will continue our study of Greek Philosophy. We continue our journey for knowledge by looking at the most famous of all Greek philosophers: Socrates. From there we will look at the impacts of Plato and Aristotle. Students will analyze the works and words of these famous thinkers and establish how their contributions still impact our world today.

Intro to Spanish - Mr. Jones
Next week, we will use the short paragraph created last week about a fictional character to begin adding more information: personal descriptions and characteristics. This will entail a vocabulary heavy week and students will be expected to understand how to use wordreference.com to assist them if they aren’t sure of the correct verb conjugations as most of the verbs we’ll use have already been covered in class. Our goal is to work toward having created a short story about a character, adding information incrementally over time.

Students will take a bit more time in 8th grade to complete their acrylic canvas still life paintings. They have done an exceptional job with underpainting to establish tone, layering to incorporate value and texture application. The Seventh grade will merge two projects together with the Surreal Character and Surreal Room through symbolism in a mixed media project. The Sixth Grade will incorporate color, pattern and sound in the upcoming unit in pain with a series of watercolor, fiber arts and canvas painting inspired by Gene Davis art.
