Tip #5: Practice Listening Skills

Our virtues of the month are respect and responsibility! A skill that is key to both of these is effective problem solving skills. One of my favorite ways to encourage this is to “talk out loud” and let your student hear the inner dialogue that you have when you run into an issue. They will start to incorporate this “self talk” to help solve obstacles they encounter which will  lead to better choices that support respect and responsibility.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have this year. amaher@hancockdayschool.org

Each middle school student is required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year.  Please remember to check this area of the blog for opportunities. Click HERE for a log form or see Mrs. Mannarino in the office.

Physical Science - Ms. Harmon
Next week we will be continuing our lesson on Elements and Chemical Bonds.

ELA - Ms. Hall

Students have done a fantastic job performing the trial scenes from To Kill a Mockingbird in class! It has truly been a blast. Next week, we are going to work on concluding the novel and taking their Part 2 quiz before possibly watching the movie version to discuss the differences in the two mediums (text and video).

US History - Mr. Saviskas
We have finished covering the lead-up to the Civil War and we will be having a test on it next week (10/29). After Tuesday’s test we will be diving into the Civil War and its effects on America. We will go over the changes in technology, the early actions of the war before finally covering some of the major battles.

High School Spanish - Mr. De Cardenas

The mastery shown by the students using the Past Progressive Tense in Spanish in real time and spontaneously is absolutely amazing. The students totally exceeded my expectations. I am so proud of them.

Next week we will finalize with Unit 3. We will have our last General Review and also a speaking class to give the students the opportunity to demonstrate once again their abilities and conversational progress. Then we will have the last assessment of this unit (Test on unit 3).

Life Science - Mrs. Swanner
Next week, continue our study of cells. There will be a “cells” vocabulary quiz covering all cell vocabulary from TB p. 40-72 on Tuesday, October 29.

ELA - Ms. Ferkol

Students did a wonderful job using their creative writing skills to express what things or people “anchor” their lives! Based on our work in class, I am excited to see what the final products look like and proudly display them in the hallway!

This week, students will continue to develop their understanding of significant events and character development within the novel. In addition to regular nightly reading, students will examine the three famous Robert Frost poems referenced within the text and further their understanding that words matter through exploring aphorisms and creating “6-word memoirs”. Students should anticipate their second quiz covering content through page 224 on Tuesday, November 5th!

**This novel is available through Audible for students to listen to while they annotate/read! When students have the opportunity to read independently in class, they may choose to listen along with their reading (via Chromebook, not cell phone). Should your child want to utilize this option they must have CORDED headphones, not bluetooth, per the school policy! Please make sure the connector fits into the headphone jack of the Chromebook :)

ELA - Ms. Hall
Students have spent the past couple of days using their poetry skills and terms to begin creating an anchor poem to be shared with their peers. Next week, we’ll continue reading the novel Posted and work on ensuring they have a full understanding of what is occurring in the novel. They will then take their new poetry knowledge to begin studying the three major Robert Frost poems cited in the novel.

American History - Mr. O’Hayer

Next week in American History we will continue our study of the American Revolution. We will identify the causes and events leading up to the War and summarize the major events, battles,  and key participants of the Revolution.

American History- Mr. Saviskas
We have just finished our unit on the early English colonies so now we’ll be jumping into the American Revolution. As a part of that, I intend to show the students the classic film, Mel Gibson’s The Patriot. I will be sending an email out to parents making sure they are comfortable with their child watching the film. If they are not I will have an alternate assignment prepared. As a film The Patriot does wonders illustrating the period and serves as an excellent introduction to the Revolution. We will also be starting our notes on the topic next week so students have full context for the film.

Advanced Spanish - Mr. Jones

Our quiz will be on 22 Oct, pushed forward one day to allow for review, and will cover - Prepositions: para + infinitivo & porque + verbo conjugado - What these verbs mean: trabajar, leer, estudiar, hablar, querer, comer, aprender, hacer, ir, salir, escuchar, comprar, & comprender - Matching the conjugated forms of these verbs with the corresponding subject pronouns. For the rest of the week, we will review definite articles before diving into more preposition and quantifier work. On Friday, we will begin a series entirely in Spanish designed to learn the language with accompanying comprehension questions. This will become a weekly occurrence.

Accelerated Math - Mr. Scordato

We have just started our unit on ratios and will be focusing on problem-solving strategies using ratio tables. Since some of the examples we will be looking at involve adjusting recipes, I hope we have some eager mathematician-chefs willing to help prepare your holiday meals.

Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear

ELA - Ms. Ferkol
Wow! Students did an incredible job at their first attempts at poetry this year! I am excited to see the final products of the hard work they did in class this week! In the coming week, students will continue to develop an understanding of key events, symbols, themes, and character development in the novel. Students will have their third quiz covering this content and vocabulary from Chapters 7-9 on Tuesday, November 5th. A study guide will be posted on Google Classroom!

**As we read, I am posting the Youtube read-alouds for this novel. When students have the opportunity to read independently in class, they may choose to listen along with their reading–should your child want to utilize this option they must have CORDED headphones, not bluetooth, per the school policy! Please make sure the connector fits into the headphone jack of the Chromebook :)

World History - Mr. O’Hayer
Next week in World History students will continue our study of Greek Philosophy. We continue our journey for knowledge by looking at the most famous of all Greek philosophers: Socrates. From there we will look at the impacts of Plato and Aristotle. Students will analyze the works and words of these famous thinkers and establish how their contributions still impact our world today.

Intro to Spanish - Mr. Jones
This week, 6th grade students will begin understanding the verb querer (to want) while combining it with prepositions para, por, & porque to express wants. This will lead into introducing other key vocabulary such as ir (to go) & salir (to leave/go out). Our goal is to have select action verbs with which we may begin to construct more complex sentences while using a wide variety of nouns and destinations.

Students are applying color in multiple ways next week:  to draw attention to specific interest points in their Haunted House (6th), to convey meaning for character design (7th) and develop an acrylic on canvas still life (8th).
