Attention 7th Grade Families
Each year, it’s a beloved tradition for 7th grade families to host the reception following the 8th grade graduation ceremony. This special event gives our 7th grade students and their families a chance to contribute to the school community in a meaningful way. Additionally, it’s a wonderful opportunity to show support for the 8th graders as they prepare to head off to high school and leave our “nest,” marking the exciting start of a new chapter in their lives. Tip #10 Start the New Year Off Right at School

1. “A new year means a fresh start. Make today the beginning of

something amazing!”

2. “Each day is a chance to grow. Show up, do your best, and see

how far you can go.”

3. “New year, new goals—let’s make this the best semester yet!”

4. “Success doesn’t come from what you do once in a while. It

comes from what you do consistently.”

It’s never too late to reset your goals and your attitude. You’ve got this!

Our Virtue of the Month for November and December is community! Consider looking for an opportunity during this time for your family to volunteer together. The United Way of the Coastal Empire has opportunities and  Second Harvest allows volunteers ages 12 and up when accompanied by an adult.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have this year. amaher@hancockdayschool.org

Each middle school student is required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year.  Please remember to check this area of the blog for opportunities. Click HERE for a log form or see Mrs. Mannarino in the office.

Algebra I - Mr. Scordato
New year, fresh start! I hope everyone feels rested and recharged. The second half of the Algebra 1 curriculum is significantly more challenging. While I know students are up to the challenge, some may need to step up their game, as this is a high school level course that requires practice and perseverance. We next will be studying Systems of Linear Inequalities.

Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
When we come back from the break, we will review what we have learned so far in Chapter 4.  We will then continue by learning about triangles by learning about medians and the centroid (4.6) as well as triangle inequalities (4.7).  We will have a day of review and the Chapter 4 test on Friday.

Geometry - Mr. Lanfear
When we come back from the break, we will begin Chapter 7 by learning about the Pythagorean Theorem and Inequality (7.1-7.2), using similar right triangles (7.3), and special right triangles such as 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangles (7.4).  We will have a day of review and a quiz covering 7.1-7.4 on Thursday.  We will then begin our Trigonometry unit on Friday!

Physical Science - Ms. Harmon
When we get back from break, we will begin our lesson on Energy and Describing Motion.

ELA - Ms. Hall

Happy Holidays! When students return from Winter Break, we will be picking back up with our reading and analysis of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. Students have finished reading through Act 3 and will resume in Act 4. They will be expected to continue developing their ability to analyze certain lines of Shakespearean literature, as well as exercise their critical thinking and character analysis skills. Once we’ve finished reading the full play, students will be expected to complete a character analysis project and take an assessment on the knowledge they’ve obtained.

US History - Mr. Saviskas
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! When we return from break, students are going to be starting our combined unit on Reconstruction and the Gilded Age. This will be a condensed unit covering a few decades of time in rapid succession. This unit should take about two weeks and I intend to have at least one project and a quiz before it is over. Enjoy the holiday season!

High School Spanish - Mr. De Cardenas

The week after we come back from Christmas break we will continue working with the undetermined preterit in Spanish. How to conjugate the irregular verbs and the various time adverbs and expressions we can use to make reference to the past. Therefore we will learn new verbs which are going to increase the students' talkative and grammatical skills. In addition to what i already mentioned we will also read another chapter of the book “La Isla Más Peligrosa¨ in order to acquire new vocabulary and to have the students practice their reading and pronunciation in Spanish language. We will as well update the board mapping project with all the new information we will research about the characters in this next episode.

I am looking forward to seeing all of the amazing trips these groups will be “taking”!

ELA - Ms. Hall
Happy Holidays! When students return from Winter Break, we’ll be picking back up with our Plan a Vacation Project. Students will use their previously researched information to construct a powerpoint displaying the knowledge they’ve gathered about the setting of their book clubs novel. They will be expected to practice their citation mastery, as well as develop their presentation skills. All of this will culminate in class presentations, in which students will be able to showcase their hard work.

When we return from Holiday Break we will begin preparing for our trip to Junior Achievement’s Finance Park. This course deals with many components of understanding finance and how money “works.” Topics will include: Income, Savings, Investments, and Risk, Debit vs cash, Budgets, and entrepreneurship. Students will have assignments that will count as grades. We will conclude the unit with a trip to JA’s Finance Park later in Jan.

Happy New Year!

Students have demonstrated knowledge of the elements of design. Knowing how to use these elements in two-dimensional works of art will be helpful as the students move into three-dimensional projects. Sixth grade will design shoes, seventh grade will design tree houses and eighth grade will design contemporary kinetic sculpture! Excited for this unit to bring a new dimension to student skill set.
