#20 Executive Functioning Skills: Planning
The virtue for March is courage. This article has some great tips, two of my favorites are:
When you define courage for your student, let them know that it often feels different inside than it looks on the outside. Courageous acts can often make you feel scared and anxious.
“Failure and rejection are often signs that we have done something brave.”
How to Encourage Courage in Your Kids
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have this year. amaher@hancockdayschool.org
Each middle school student is required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year. Please remember to check this area of the blog for opportunities. Click HERE for a log form or see Mrs. Mannarino in the office.
Algebra I - Mr. Scordato
The students have made a lot of progress this year with word problems, and we will take it to the next level in our study of projectile motion.
Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Advanced Algebra, we will finish reviewing solving systems of equations by learning how to solve a system by elimination. There will be a day of review on Wednesday and the quiz covering systems of equations on Thursday. Then Friday is Field Day!!
Geometry - Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Geometry, we will continue Chapter 12 by having a quiz covering 12.1-12.3 on Wednesday. We will then begin learning how to find the volume of prisms/cylinders (12.4). On Thursday, we will do an activity involving popcorn and volume! Then Friday is Field Day!!
Physical Science - Ms. Harmon
Next week we'll be having a test on Electricity and Magnetism. Then we will begin our Science Reflection Project.
Please enjoy our photos from our Magnetic Fields Forever Lab where students built temporary magnets and electromagnets.
ELA - Ms. Hall
At this point in our unit, students have nearly finished reading their novels. Next week, they will spend the full week working with their classmates to create a presentation that demonstrates their in-depth understanding of their choice novel. These slides must be completed and prepared to present to the class by May 5th. This will be taken as a project/test grade for the unit.
US History - Mr. Saviskas
Hello again! Next week we will be finishing up the last parts of Saving Private Ryan and moving headfirst into the rest of our WWII unit. The kids have been very interested thus far so I know they’ll love this unit. On Thursday, May 1st, we will have a test on the Interwar material and on the first set of guided notes of the World War II unit. We will do some review on Wednesday and students will have a study guide to go along with it.
High School Spanish - Mr. De Cardenas
The students have demonstrated a remarkable understanding of the Spanish language. Their progress in speaking, listening, and reading comprehension has exceeded expectations and reflects a strong commitment to learning.
Next week, in addition to continuing our work with the Present Perfect tense, we will begin exploring the Perfect Progressive tense. This will help students learn how to recognize and use it effectively in context, adding another valuable grammatical structure to their communication toolkit.
On Monday, there will be a quiz designed to assess the student’s ability to apply the concepts covered in class through practical exercises.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or suggestions. I look forward to another productive and engaging week of learning!
Algebra I - Mr. Scordato
Wow! The students are thriving with…wait for it, word problems. This can always be a struggle, but it’s really the most important aspect of math when you think about the problem-solving process, which should always start and finish with the understanding of a real-world scenario. The scavenger hunt about projectile motion problems was a huge hit, and I could not be more proud of this crew of mathematicians.
Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Pre-Algebra, we will complete Chapter 9 by having a day of review on Monday and the test on 9.1-9.4 on Tuesday. We will then begin Chapter 10 by learning about the angles and perimeter of triangles (10.1) as well as classifying polygons and quadrilaterals (10.2). Then Friday is Field Day!!
Life Science - Ms. Harmon
Next week we'll be learning about Reproduction and Genetics. We will also have a test on Friday next week over biomes. Please enjoy more photos of our Population Comparison Project.
Life Science - Mrs. Swanner
Next week, we will continue our study of Populations, Communities, Biomes, and Ecosystems.
ELA - Ms. Ferkol
This coming week we will be finishing The Hobbit (I can’t believe it’s already happening!!) and students will utilize the two remaining days before field day to complete an in-class one-pager quiz due May 1st. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of important characters, quotes, and symbols through a creative interpretation of the novel! This week will be short and sweet for many reasons!!
ELA - Ms. Hall
Next week, students will be reading the exciting conclusion to The Hobbit before taking their learned knowledge and using it to create an engaging one-page assignment. This one-pager will demonstrate not only their understanding of the content of the book, but an ability to further analyze and make connections among symbols, the characters, and the author. They will have two entire class periods to work on this before it is due on May 1st for a quiz grade.
American History - Mr. O’Hayer
Next week in American History, we continue our examination of the Civil War. Our focus next week will be on the battles of the CW and the people who shaped the outcome. Students will begin their next project: Creating an officer of the CW.
American History - Mr. Saviskas
Greetings one and all! Next week we are going to review our unit on Slavery before taking a quiz on Wednesday, April 30th. After the quiz we will continue our Civil War unit through the week as we rapidly approach the end of the year.
Advanced Spanish - Mr. Jones
The verbs saber, conocer & poder will be practiced next week in addition to finishing our short series in Spanish, Exr@!. Students will then complete a comprehension quiz over the content of said series after having reviewed the main moments and overall gist together. Field day is upon us, woot woot!

Accelerated Math - Mr. Scordato
The students loved learning about finding the Volume of Prisms by filling them with Starburst candies, which each have a volume of 4 cubic centimeters. We may have to use that candy to explore surface area. They will also be working on a project to design a new candy called Starburst Prism.
Pre-Algebra - Mr. Lanfear

Earth Science - Mrs. Swanner
Next week, we will continue “Exploring Space,” with an Exploring Earth quiz on Tuesday, April 29. We will then segue into the “Sun-Earth-Moon System.”
ELA - Ms. Ferkol
Students have finished their final novels of the year! I can’t believe it!! With that being said, students’ interactive notebooks will be due in Google Classroom on Monday, April 28th for a quiz grade. Moving into next week, students will begin the two-week endeavor of creating their own dystopian societies based on everything we have learned so far in this unit. First they will create the foundations of their societies and create a tri-fold displaying this important information. They will then use that information in the following week to write a persuasive essay in an attempt to convince their audience to join their societies.
World History - Mr. O’Hayer
Next week in World History, students will continue their study of one of the most important periods in world history: The Industrial Revolution. This is one of my favorite topics to teach. Students learn about how/why this event happened and research all the amazing inventions that still impact our lives today. Students have been working hard on their “Teach a Lesson” project.
Spanish Fundamentals - Mr. Jones
Next week, students will work to extract previously covered material from their book project on a handout that helps to organize the information of their character into the chronological order of an organic conversation; this will lead into our Banana Phone project on Thursday, 1 May in which they’ll use their banana phones to call another student, ask/answer questions, hang up, and then another pair will conduct their conversation. This is no monkey business, just good fun and an interactive review of material covered thus far before field day… Go 6th grade!!
6th grade will spring into the season with a Tulip Library.
7th graders will continue designs used for a tabletop still life.
8th graders Students will continue to produce a final portrait using printed materials from the series.
