#21 Executive Functioning Skills: Task Initiation
As we wrap up this academic year, our virtue is Appreciation. There are many ways to encourage the development of this virtue. Some ideas include:
Take time at family meals to share something each person appreciates.
Volunteer together.
Encourage thank-you notes and teach your child how to write a good one.
Teach your child how to give a good and meaningful compliment.
Take a gratitude walk together and take turns appreciating nature.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have this year. amaher@hancockdayschool.org
Each middle school student is required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year. Please remember to check this area of the blog for opportunities. Click HERE for a log form or see Mrs. Mannarino in the office.
Algebra I - Mr. Scordato
The test on Probability will be on Wednesday and then we start reviewing for Trimester Exams. One last dad joke for the year. “Why do middle schoolers always travel in odd numbers?” Sigh. “Because they can’t even.” Eye roll.
Advanced Algebra - Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Advanced Algebra, we will complete our final unit by having a day of review on Monday and the test on factoring and solving quadratic equations on Tuesday. We will then begin reviewing for exams and our review olympics!
Geometry - Mr. Lanfear
Next week in Geometry, we will complete Chapter 12 by having the Chapter 12 test on Monday. We will then begin reviewing for exams and our review olympics!
Physical Science - Ms. Harmon
On Tuesday we will continue presenting our Unit Review Presentations and end our final review for our Exam on Friday. Only a few more days left until summer Yayyyy!!! 😀
ELA - Ms. Hall
Students did a fantastic job presenting to the class on their choice novels earlier this week! I was genuinely impressed with their public speaking skills. As we conclude this Creative Writing Unit, students will spend Monday and Tuesday editing and creating their final drafts for their individual vignette writings. Once these have been turned in, students will be given the final exam study guide and we’ll begin preparing in class together!
US History - Mr. Saviskas
We’re at the final week of classes! For this week we won’t be learning any new material. We are going to be focusing entirely on reviewing for the exam. Our 8th grade exam will cover everything we’ve learned from January till May. That means we will cover the Gilded Age, Holocaust, World War I, Interwar and World War II on this exam. Throughout next week we will go through each unit (1 per day) and refresh the student’s memory. Students will receive a study guide on Monday which I would highly recommend them filling out.
High School Spanish - Mr. De Cardenas
Subject: Final Exams – Celebrating Student Achievement in Spanish
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we approach the end of the school year, we are proud to recognize the tremendous growth and accomplishments of our students in their Spanish language learning.
Next week, we will be holding our Second Semester Final Exams, providing students with the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have gained throughout the year:
Tuesday: Speaking Exam – Students will showcase their communicative abilities through individual performances, reflecting the progress they’ve made in spoken Spanish.
Thursday: Writing Exam – Students will complete a comprehensive written assessment, applying their understanding of grammar and structure to certify their Spanish language proficiency.
We are excited to see our students demonstrate the results of their hard work and dedication. Thank you for your continued support throughout this academic journey.

ELA - Ms. Ferkol
Wow, I can’t believe what an incredible year it has been! For our last full week together, we will watch The Fellowship of the Ring and students will enact their prior knowledge to draw comparisons and identify contrasts between the novel they’ve just finished studying and its sequel. This leads to many great discussions and will allow students to connect the dots between Tokien’s placement of the Ring of Power in the prequel and its counterpart in the first part of Tolkien's classic trilogy. Students may bring in their own snacks and prepare for an exciting two days! We will then begin studying for our exam on Wednesday; however, a study guide and practice should be posted early in the week.
ELA - Ms. Hall
Students have done a wonderful job so far on their dodecahedron projects! To celebrate their hard work, we will be having a watch party on Monday and Tuesday. Students have been encouraged to bring in hobbit-y foods, as we’ll be watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. They will have the opportunity to note and discuss the differences in the two types of media the story has been presented in. Once we’ve concluded this unit, students will be given a copy of the final exam study guide, and we’ll begin preparing in class together!
American History - Mr. O’Hayer
Next week in American History, we complete our examination of the Civil War. Our focus next week will be on the outcome and Reconstruction. Students will also begin preparing for their Trimester Exam. Study materials have been posted in GC.
American History - Mr. Saviskas
The end of the year is upon us! We will be spending all next week reviewing for our upcoming exam. This exam will cover everything we’ve learned from January till May. That means we will be covering our units on the Constitution, New American Republic and Slavery. Students will be receiving a study guide on Monday which will cover those units. We will be practicing and reviewing throughout the whole week.
Advanced Spanish - Mr. Jones
This week, we are reviewing all material covered this trimester which seems to be going more smoothly than expected! Students will be given a comprehensive study guide on Friday, 9 May that will lay out said information for them in addition to providing some information regarding the oral portion of exams. The oral exam will be on Tuesday, 13 May and the written exam on Thursday, 15 May. ¡Buena suerte, chicos!

Wow, what a year!! For our last full week of school, students will convert the essays they’ve written into short speeches and practice presenting in class in preparation for our Dystopian Recruitment Challenge happening on Wednesday (5/14). On this day, they may dress down in their best “leader” attire! (As formal as they would like, but this is NOT a dress down). We will then begin in-class review for their exam. A study guide and practice will be posted on Google Classroom at the beginning of the week.
World History - Mr. O’Hayer
Next week in World History, students will continue their study of one of the most important periods in world history: The Industrial Revolution. We will finish up presenting our unit projects. We will also begin preparing for trimester exams.
Spanish Fundamentals - Mr. Jones
Having concluded the book project, we will extract information from it to prepare our questions/responses to a guided dialogue that students will play out on Friday. They will also receive a comprehensive study guide for exams which will be next week: oral exam on Tuesday, 13 May and written exam on Thursday, 15 May. They got this!
Students have developed techniques such as how to draw proportion, layer brushstrokes to create value and combine materials to create sculpture that functions. You can see their achievements on Artsonia! Students have reflected their knowledge in our review of presentations. Next week we will learn techniques on how to paint the ocean. A place that continues to quench our thirst for more!
