#22 Summer Work: Effective strategies for students to help them complete summer assignments without stress or procrastination:

✅ 1. Break It Down with a Calendar

  • Strategy: Break large assignments into small, manageable tasks.

  • Tool: Use a calendar or planner to assign specific tasks to specific days.

  • Example: If a book has 10 chapters, read one chapter every 3 days, and finish with time to spare.

✅ 2. Create a Weekly Routine

  • Strategy: Set aside consistent days/times each week to work.

  • Tip: Treat it like a mini class—e.g., “Mondays and Thursdays from 10–11am = Summer Work Time.”

✅ 3. Use the 20/5 Rule

  • Strategy: Work for 20 minutes, then take a 5-minute break.

  • Why: Keeps your brain fresh and helps you avoid burnout.

✅ 4. Make a Checklist

  • Strategy: Write a to-do list with boxes to check off each completed task.

  • Why: It feels motivating to see progress and it helps you stay organized.

✅ 5. Choose a Good Workspace

  • Strategy: Find a quiet, comfortable, well-lit place without distractions (like your phone or TV).

  • Tip: Use the same space regularly to build a habit.

✅ 6. Set Goals and Rewards

  • Strategy: Set daily or weekly goals and reward yourself when you meet them.

  • Example: “If I finish my reading today, I can watch an episode of my favorite show.”

✅ 7. Use Tools That Help You Focus

  • Strategy: Use apps or tools like:

    • Timer apps (Pomodoro)

    • Sticky notes for reminders

    • Audiobooks if allowed, to follow along while reading

✅ 8. Get an Accountability Buddy

  • Strategy: Pair up with a friend or sibling to check in on progress.

  • Why: You’re more likely to stick with a plan if someone else is doing it too.

✅ 9. Ask for Help When Needed

  • Strategy: Don’t wait until the last minute—ask a parent, teacher, or tutor if you get stuck.

✅ 10. Finish Early, Relax More

  • Strategy: Aim to finish your work by early August.

  • Why: It gives you time to review, fix mistakes, and enjoy the end of summer without pressure.

As we wrap up this academic year, our virtue is Appreciation. There are many ways to encourage the development of this virtue. Some ideas include:

  • Take time at family meals to share something each person appreciates.

  • Volunteer together.

  • Encourage thank-you notes and teach your child how to write a good one.

  • Teach your child how to give a good and meaningful compliment.

  • Take a gratitude walk together and take turns appreciating nature.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns you may have this year. amaher@hancockdayschool.org
